Liverpool and Tottenham eye big-money move for Leeds star Kalvin Phillips

Kalvin Phillips’ meteoric rise could bring about a big move next summer with Liverpool and

The 24-year-old arrived in the Premier League with Leeds this season and has already picked up four England caps despite playing just four games in the top flight so far.

England boss Gareth Southgate is a big fan of the Yorkshireman, while Leeds manager Marelo Bielsa talks in glowing terms of his versatility, able to play in the middle of defence and midfield.

The Sun reports that both Liverpool and Tottenham have become very impressed with Phillips and will monitor him for the rest of the season with the intention of making a move next summer.

The England international will not be a cheap option, especially if Leeds stay in the Premier League, which looks likely after an impressive start to the season after promotion.

The Leeds academy graduate would likely cost around £50m, a fee which could increase still further if a bidding war breaks out between top Premier League clubs.

Phillips signed a new contract at Leeds last year, which keeps him at the club until 2024, but his reported salary of £30,000-a-week would be significantly improved if he were to move to the likes of Liverpool or Spurs.

His international call-up was somewhat unexpected and Phillips admits he didn’t see it coming when he got the news.

‘It’s going to be a battle to play for England, I know that,’ he said. ‘To be honest I didn’t think I’d be here. If you’d told me a year ago I’d be here I wouldn’t even think that.

‘It’s healthy for all of us, everyone in the squad, my position or not.

‘There’s a lot of people that want to play for England, we’ve got great players in my role and all I can do is do my best in training, in games and at club level as well.

‘Hopefully that does enough to help me play games and I’ve started reasonably well, so hopefully I can keep that up.’
