SPOILER ALERT: Do not read until you have watched the Season 17 premiere of Grey’s Anatomy.
Grey’s Anatomy fans were shocked and delighted this week, when Derek Shepherd appeared at the end of the Season 17 premiere.
Shepherd, played by Patrick Dempsey, was killed off the show five years ago in a frankly traumatising episode. A brain surgeon dying from a brain injury? Rude!
But Dempsey returned to the Grey’s set and appeared in a dream sequence at the end of the two-hour special premiere of the new season, which was dedicated to frontline healthcare workers.
Dempsey shared an adorable photo of himself on set with Pompeo, giving us a glimpse into what life would look like if Derek hadn’t died. Pompeo shared the same photos, adding: “Let’s love, let’s heal, let’s wear a mask…❤️.”
The scene shows Derek reuniting with his wife, Meredith Grey –– played by Ellen Pompeo –– on a beach.
And it turns out that this won’t be the only time Grey’s fans will get a glimpse of their beloved McDreamy this season.
“We will see more of [Derek] this season,” said showrunner Krista Vernoff. “This was not just a cameo. He will appear three more times,” she said.
Vernoff said that the main reason to bring back Derek was to make the show a bit more interesting and exciting in a time when it’s difficult to film scenes thanks to COVID restrictions.
“We had to come up with creative ways to allow our show to still be fun and romantic and provide some escapism,” she said. “Enter Patrick Dempsey. The beach motif — which will continue beyond the premiere — provided a way for us to live outside the pandemic even for a little while here and there. And Derek’s return provided pure joy for us, for Meredith, and for the fans.”
