At long last, production on HBO Max’s Friends reunion is finally underway. On a new episode of Rob Lowe’s podcast, Literally! With Rob Lowe, star Lisa Kudrow revealed that she and the gang have already filmed select scenes for the Friends reunion, which has been pushed repeatedly due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. According to Kudrow, the rest of the HBO Max special will film in “early spring” and hopefully hit the platform later this year.
Lowe has been hyping up his interview with Kudrow for days — he even plugged it Thursday morning on The View, telling the co-hosts that he “got her to tell [him] about the Friends reunion, some of which has already been shot” — and it certainly didn’t disappoint. “There’s different facets to it, and we already shot packages of things,” said Kudrow. “I pre-shot something already so we’re definitely doing it, because I already shot a little something.”
Kudrow went on to clarify that she and her Friends co-stars — Jennifer Aniston, Courteney Cox, Matt LeBlanc, Matthew Perry, and David Schwimmer — will not be reprising their roles, as fans have seen with other revivals, but instead reflecting on the sitcom’s legacy as themselves. “It’s not a reboot,” she explained. “It’s not like a scripted thing, we’re not portraying our characters. It’s us getting together, which just doesn’t happen a lot and has never happened in front of other people since 2004 when we stopped.”
“Is it you just having nachos over at Jen’s house?” joked Lowe. “Yes, that’s what it is,” replied Kudrow with a laugh.
The Friends reunion has had quite a long journey to the screen. HBO Max originally ordered the special event in February 2020, with the goal of debuting it at the time of the service’s launch in May. However, the reunion’s original taping in March 2020 was canceled due to COVID-19, and it was pushed various times before WarnerMedia settled on the new date of March 2021. “Friends reunion being rescheduled for the beginning of March,” revealed Perry in November. “Looks like we have a busy year coming up. And that’s the way I like it!”
